People may think it’s a blessing, but large breasts aren’t all fun and games. Not only can they garner unwanted attention, but they may also cause upper back pain.
Going through life being objectified and in pain can be disheartening, and you may be at a point where you’re thinking, “Enough is enough.” In that case, a plastic surgeon could help with a cosmetic breast procedure.
Below, we’ll discuss the various surgical options you can consider if you want to reduce large breasts.
Reduction Mammoplasty
Reduction mammoplasty is the traditional breast reduction surgery used. It’s effective for significantly large breasts and allows for considerable reshaping and repositioning of the nipple and areola.
You’re placed under general anesthesia and the surgeon will make incisions along the areola. It’ll go down vertically to the breast crease, and then they’ll remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. The surgery finishes with sutures and possibly drainage tube placement.
While this procedure is highly effective, you may get visible scarring. Plus, there’s a long recovery period.
Vertical Reduction
This is also known as a “lollipop” reduction since the incisions go around the areola, and then vertically down to the breast crease to resemble a lollipop.
This surgery is very similar to a reduction mammoplasty, but there’s less scarring. However, there’s less flexibility for breast contouring. In addition, it’s only suitable for moderate reductions, not very large ones.
Scarless Breast Reduction
Scarless breast reduction is essentially just liposuction. You’ll go under either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia for this procedure.
Small incisions are made, then a cannula is inserted to suck out the excess fat. This surgery has very minimal scarring and a shorter recovery time, so it’s great for getting your ideal breast size if you want little downtime. Do note that it’s less effective for glandular tissue and skin, and it has limited reshaping ability, so it may not be an ideal solution for some people.
Periareolar Reduction
The periareolar reduction is also known as a donut reduction. This is something to consider for mild to moderate reductions.
After you go under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes a circular incision around the areola. Next, they remove the excess tissue and skin, and then reshape your breast. They’ll close up the incision, and the only scarring you’ll get is around the areola.
This procedure is less effective for significant reshaping and the surgeon’s limited in the amount of tissue they can remove. But there’s minimal scarring, so it won’t be apparent that you’ve gone under the knife.

Consider Your Options for Reducing Large Breasts
Living with large breasts can create a wide variety of health issues, which is why many people turn to reductions. With the right procedure, you can see posture improvement, and as a result, get better breathing and less back pain. Also, you’ll have the perfect breast size and shape.
So consult with a plastic surgeon and discuss your choices. Together, you can decide the type of surgery that’ll give you the optimal outcome.
